Holzheim Castle

Holzheim Castle is a medieval lowland moated fortress (Niederungsburg) near Heistern in the Düren district of North Rhine-Westphalia, traceable to around 1333. Unlike the dramatic hilltop castles of the Rhine Valley, lowland castles of this type relied on water-filled moats rather than elevation for defence — a characteristic form of medieval fortification in the flat terrain west of Cologne. The estate today operates as a working farm and equestrian centre, giving the historic structure an everyday agricultural context rather than a museum setting. It is listed as a protected architectural monument in North Rhine-Westphalia.
