Prazeres Cemetery

One of Lisbon's finest historic cemeteries, founded in 1833, with elaborate mausoleums and a stop right at the terminus of Tram 28.

Founded in 1833 during a cholera epidemic, the Cemitério dos Prazeres — Cemetery of Pleasures — is one of Lisbon's most atmospheric places. Spread across the hills of the Estrela neighborhood, it reads like a city in miniature: mausoleums and family vaults built in marble, iron, and azulejo tiles tell the story of Portugal's bourgeoisie across two centuries. Cypresses and laurel trees shade the avenues between tombs, and cats roam freely among the monuments. The final stop of the iconic tram line 28 sits right at the main entrance, making the cemetery easy to reach. It is an unusually quiet way to experience Lisbon — unhurried, photogenic, and far from the crowds of Alfama and Baixa.
