Château d'Angles-sur-l'Anglin

The Château d'Angles-sur-l'Anglin is a ruined medieval castle perched on a limestone escarpment above the Anglin river in the Vienne département. Originally constructed in the 12th century, it was significantly expanded in the 15th century during a period when this stretch of the Poitou was fiercely contested between French and English forces in the Hundred Years' War. Listed as a classified historic monument, the castle's crumbling towers and curtain walls are now open to exploration, rewarding visitors with sweeping views across the wooded river valley below. The medieval village at the foot of the cliff is itself consistently ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, making the site a natural stopping point on any journey through the Vienne.
