Junkernschloss

The Junkernschloss is the ruin of a medieval moated castle in the municipality of Driedorf in the Lahn-Dill district, set within the Hessian Westerwald. As a Wasserburg, the complex was originally surrounded by a water-filled moat — a defensive arrangement relatively uncommon in this part of central Germany. Little is documented about its precise construction date or original lords; the name 'Junkernschloss' points to the minor nobility (Junker) who typically held such small castle seats as local power bases. Classified as a protected Kulturdenkmal in Hesse, the site today consists of largely overgrown masonry and is best reached on foot, making it a quiet detour for walkers and local history enthusiasts.
