Deutsches Theater München
Also known as: Deutsches Theater, German Theater of Munich, Feenpalast
The Deutsches Theater Munich on Schwanthalerstrasse opened in 1896 and has remained the city's most important private stage for musicals, dance, operetta and show ever since. Marlene Dietrich, Mistinguett and later Liza Minnelli all appeared here; the auditorium burned out during the war and was rebuilt in 1951. During Carnival the house becomes Munich's largest ballroom, drawing tens of thousands of guests in evening dress. A long renovation from 2008 to 2014 restored the stucco and acoustics. If you want to see Munich after dark beyond the beer-garden cliche, this is where West End and Broadway tours land.
