Deutschlandhalle

The Deutschlandhalle stood on the Berlin Messe grounds in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and was, when it opened in 1935, the world's largest self-supporting hall, seating around 20,000. Inaugurated by the Nazi regime for their own Olympic programme, it burned out after air raids in 1943 and was rebuilt in 1957, now plain and functional. Boxing nights, ice revues, six-day cycling races and rock concerts followed, ending with Holiday on Ice. Despite heritage protection, the Berlin senate voted in 2011 to demolish it in favour of a new exhibition complex. Today's CityCube near Messe Sued station sits essentially on the old footprint.
