Eigerwand

Eigerwand station exists not on a mountainside but inside the Eiger itself — blasted out of solid rock as the Jungfrau railway was bored through the massif between 1896 and 1912. Lateral tunnels were driven to within metres of the sheer north face, and a series of windows carved into the cliff open directly onto the vertical ice wall and the Grindelwald glacier hundreds of metres below. For decades, trains climbing to Jungfraujoch paused here briefly so passengers could peer into the void through the living rock — an uncanny window between enclosed tunnel and open abyss. Since the stop was discontinued, the station has sat sealed and silent: platforms empty, signs fading, the only movement the trains that now glide through without pausing. Passed at speed in near-darkness, it registers as a flicker — one of the strangest abandoned outposts in Alpine railway history.
