Belém Tower
Lisbon
Also known as: Elevador do Carmo
Lisbon's iconic 1902 cast-iron elevator links Baixa to Chiado, with a rooftop platform offering sweeping views over the city and Tagus.
The Elevador de Santa Justa is Lisbon's most striking vertical landmark: a nearly 45-metre-tall ornate cast-iron elevator that connects the flat Baixa district with the elevated Chiado neighbourhood. Designed by engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard — a pupil of Gustave Eiffel — it opened in 1902, initially steam-powered and converted to electricity in 1907. The neo-Gothic filigree ironwork gives it an unmistakably Eiffelesque character. Atop the structure, an observation platform delivers panoramic views over the Baixa rooftops, the Tagus river and the hilltop Castelo de São Jorge. It is a listed monument and one of Lisbon's most photographed spots.
