Episcopal Palace, Vienna
Also known as: Erzbischöfliches Palais Wien, Erzbischöfliches Palais mit Andreaskapelle
The Archbishop's Palace at Stephansplatz 7 is the official residence of the Archbishop of Vienna and stands right next to St Stephen's Cathedral. Bishops have lived on this spot since 1438; the present Baroque palace was built between 1632 and 1641 under Cardinal Anton Wolfradt and remodelled several times, most recently in the late 19th century with a neo-Baroque facade. Inside are the 17th-century Andreas Chapel, the reception rooms of the archdiocese, and the hall from whose balcony, in 1955, Vienna heard Foreign Minister Leopold Figl announce the signing of the State Treaty restoring Austrian sovereignty. The arcaded inner courtyard can be entered through the main portal during the day; the palace itself is normally accessible only during heritage open days or for concerts in the chapel.
