Mozarthaus Vienna

Mozarthaus Vienna is the only surviving Vienna apartment of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, on Domgasse 5 just behind St. Stephen's Cathedral. Mozart lived here from September 1784 to April 1787 - the largest and most expensive of his eleven Vienna addresses - and composed Le nozze di Figaro in these rooms, which is why the building was long known simply as the Figarohaus. Joseph Haydn visited Mozart here several times, and it was here that Mozart rehearsed what became known as the Haydn Quartets. Opened for Mozart's 250th birthday in 2006, the museum spreads over four floors, with the original apartment on the first floor and context exhibits on the 1780s Vienna music scene above. Audio guides play passages of the works composed here in the very rooms where they were written.
