Buġibba Temple

The Bugibba Temple is a prehistoric Megalithic temple from the Tarxien phase (around 3000-2500 BC), one of the lesser-known members of Malta's temple culture, itself a UNESCO World Heritage tradition. Its present setting is strange: the sanctuary stands in the middle of the Double Tree by Hilton in San Pawl il-Bahar, fenced off between pool, parking lot and street, like a ruin tucked into the hotel garden. Three rows of megalithic blocks and an altar with fish reliefs survive, unusual for Maltese temples whose iconography is mostly abstract spirals. Entry is free and the temple can be visited from the hotel promenade, a charming obligatory stop between Bugibba and Qawra Point.
