Underground Valletta

Underground Valletta is a guided tour through the tunnel network beneath Malta's capital, operated by Heritage Malta. The passages served as civilian air-raid shelters during the intense Axis bombing campaigns of 1940–1942 — a siege so severe that Malta was collectively awarded the George Cross in 1942. Guides, some of whom draw on personal family memories from the wartime years, bring the experience beyond dry facts into something unexpectedly emotional for many visitors. Helmets and hairnets are mandatory; sturdy shoes are strongly recommended. The tour is suitable for older children and adults with no strong aversion to confined spaces, and runs approximately one hour.
