Municipal Gallery of Athens

Also known as: Dimotiki pinakotheke Athinas

The Municipal Gallery of Athens is the city's municipal art museum, holding a collection of Greek painting and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 2010 it has occupied the former silk factory on Avdi Square in Metaxourgio, the neighbourhood whose name (metaxourgio = silk factory) the building itself coined. The long 19th-century neoclassical structure was restored and converted into bright exhibition halls. The collection includes works by Konstantinos Parthenis, Yannis Tsarouchis and Yannis Moralis, and the gallery regularly hosts contemporary Athenian artists. The square outside is one of the liveliest stages of Metaxourgio's nightlife.
