The Kubelie Mosque was an Ottoman neighborhood mosque built in 1735-36 in Kavaja, named for the domes (kube) over its porch and prayer hall. It was considered the most important Ottoman-era building in town. In 1967 Enver Hoxha declared Albania the world's first atheist state; hundreds of mosques, churches and tekkes were demolished in the following years. The Kubelie Mosque fell to the wave in the 1970s and no longer exists - the site survives only in historic photographs and local memorial projects.
