Lessing Theater

Nothing of the Lessing Theatre on today's Kapelle-Ufer in Berlin-Mitte remains - it was destroyed in an Allied air raid in April 1945 and its ruins cleared in the post-war years. Opened in 1888 after a swift construction, it was among the most important private theatres of the Kaiserreich: Otto Brahm cultivated naturalist drama here, Max Reinhardt staged repeated productions, and works by Gerhart Hauptmann and Henrik Ibsen premiered on its boards. The plot now lies inside the Bundestag complex along the Spree. Walking the river path and noticing the small plaque on Kapelle-Ufer, you can only imagine the building it commemorates.
