Löwenbräu Art District

The Löwenbräu-Areal in Zürich's Kreis 5 is a late-19th-century brewery complex whose red-brick industrial buildings have been progressively converted since the 1990s into Switzerland's most concentrated contemporary art hub. Hauser & Wirth — now one of the world's most influential galleries — opened its very first space here in 1992, years before the site had consolidated its international reputation. Today the complex houses Kunsthalle Zürich, the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, and roughly a dozen commercial galleries, all while retaining the raw industrial character of the original factory fabric. Thursday-evening vernissages draw a mixed crowd of collectors, art students, and international visitors. Outside of openings, the ground-floor café and restaurant offer an entry point to the site on any ordinary weekday.
