MAK – Museum of Applied Arts

The MAK on Vienna's Stubenring stretch of the Ringstrasse is Austria's oldest collection of applied arts, founded in 1863 as the Imperial-Royal Austrian Museum for Art and Industry on the London model. The Neo-Renaissance main building rose between 1868 and 1871 to plans by Heinrich Ferstel, architect of the Votivkirche. Its holdings range from Gothic stained glass and Ottoman carpets through Viennese porcelain, Biedermeier furniture and Jugendstil classics by Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann to contemporary design. The hall displaying the working drawings for Klimt's Stoclet Frieze is especially renowned. Visitors can tour the permanent galleries, the courtyard cafe and rotating exhibitions; Tuesday evenings offer reduced admission.
