Maria Regina Martyrum

Maria Regina Martyrum is a Roman Catholic memorial church in Berlin-Charlottenburg-Nord, built 1960-1963 as the German Catholics' memorial church for the witnesses of faith and conscience of 1933-1945. Architects: Hans Schaedel and Friedrich Ebert. Location and form are programmatic: the church sits close to the Ploetzensee execution site, where over 2800 people were murdered by the Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945, including Father Alfred Delp and members of the White Rose. The heavy, windowless concrete cube on its raised platform reads as a sarcophagus; the chancel holds a wall painting by Georg Meistermann. The crypt contains the graves of Blessed Bernhard Lichtenberg and Erich Klausener. A silent counterweight to the nearby memorial.
