Mexikoplatz

Mexikoplatz is a protected Schmuckplatz — a formal ornamental square — in Berlin-Zehlendorf, laid out in 1905 as part of the prosperous Wilhelmine-era villa colony spreading south of the city. It doubles as the forecourt of the S-Bahn station of the same name, one of the few surviving timber Jugendstil suburban railway stations in Berlin. Despite its evocative name, the connection to Mexico is purely nominal: late-19th-century Berlin had a fashion for naming streets and squares after distant countries, and this one simply stuck. Today the square is a quiet, leafy retreat — grand Altbau apartment buildings framing an orderly green, largely off the tourist map but valued by residents for its unhurried, old-money atmosphere.
