Elefsina Air Base

Also known as: Elefsis Airport, LGEL

Elefsina Air Base, also known as Eleusis Air Base, lies just north of the ancient city of Elefsina on the Saronic Gulf. It was built in 1937 as a Hellenic Air Force base and was used during the Second World War by the German Luftwaffe and later Allied units. Today the Hellenic Air Force shares the field with US forces, hosting transport and tanker aircraft. The base is not open to the public; travellers typically only pass by it on the way to the archaeological site of ancient Eleusis.
