Museum of Photography

The Museum of Photography of the Berlin State Museums occupies the 1909 former Landwehr Officers' Club at Jebensstrasse 2, directly opposite Zoologischer Garten station. Opened in 2004, it is dominated by the Helmut Newton Foundation, whose collection rotates across the ground and first floors - Newton's oversized nudes, Vogue fashion shoots and portraits of Catherine Deneuve or Charlotte Rampling. The upper floor shows 180 years of photography from the Art Library, from early daguerreotypes via August Sander to the Becher school. The damaged ballroom, with its gilded stucco and coffered ceiling, only reopened in 2008 as the "Kaisersaal" and now serves as the central exhibition hall.
