Berlin Zoologischer Garten

Berlin Zoologischer Garten station on Hardenbergplatz in Charlottenburg opened in 1878 under the Wilhelmine empire and is today a listed cultural monument. After World War II it became the sole major functioning rail terminus in West Berlin — for decades the unavoidable arrival point for anyone entering the western half of the divided city, its steel-and-glass canopy a Cold War landmark. The station became internationally notorious through Christiane F.'s 1978 memoir 'Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo', which documented the heroin epidemic and youth homelessness concentrated around its forecourt — a portrait so stark it was adapted into a film in 1981 and a TV series in 2021. Since the Hauptbahnhof opened in 2006, Bahnhof Zoo operates primarily as a regional and S-Bahn interchange, with direct pedestrian access to the Kurfürstendamm and Berlin Zoo. The station is fully wheelchair accessible.
