Museum für Meereskunde

The Museum für Meereskunde no longer exists — it was one of Germany's most significant oceanographic museums, founded in 1900 as a dedicated institution of Berlin University. Kaiser Wilhelm II personally presided over its opening on 5 March 1906, a detail that reflects the close ties between Wilhelmine naval ambitions and state-sponsored marine science. The museum was heavily damaged by bombing during World War II and was never rebuilt. It remains a gap in Berlin's institutional history, a reminder of how much scientific heritage the city lost to wartime destruction.
