NEMO Science Center

NEMO Science Museum at Oosterdok is the largest science centre in the Netherlands, housed in a 1997 building by Renzo Piano. The green copper-clad volume sits directly on the foundations of the IJ tunnel and tilts upward like a ship's prow, deliberately echoing Amsterdam's maritime past. Inside, five floors of about 200 interactive exhibits let visitors build soap bubbles, pump water cycles and trigger chain reactions across physics, chemistry, biology and technology. The sloping roof doubles as a public square open to anyone, with sweeping views over the old city centre and explicit permission to picnic. In summer a small water landscape runs across the roof, and in autumn it hosts an open-air bar.
