Gleisdreieck Park

Park am Gleisdreieck is a 31.5-hectare green space between Kreuzberg and Schoeneberg, built on the wastelands of the former Anhalter and Potsdamer freight stations. After decades of local activism it opened in three sections - East Park, West Park and Flaschenhals - between 2011 and 2014, designed by Atelier LOIDL. Exposed railway tracks, old signal posts and a deliberate industrial atmosphere contrast with open meadows, a skatepark, beach volleyball courts and community gardens. By day it fills with tech workers from the surrounding offices grabbing lunch; by evening skaters and slackliners take over, and on weekends families from the neighbouring quarters spread out on the lawns. From the southern edge the stand of the wartime aircraft engine testing site rises above the treetops, a strange relic of the park's industrial past.
