Parque Eduardo VII

Parque Eduardo VII closes the northern end of the Avenida da Liberdade, rising in rigidly symmetrical grass terraces toward a broad hilltop plateau. The park was renamed in 1903 to honor the visit of King Edward VII of Great Britain, a gesture reaffirming the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance — one of Europe's oldest diplomatic relationships, dating to the 14th century. Hidden within the clipped hedge geometry is the Estufa Fria, a cool greenhouse built in the 1930s under an open lattice of bamboo and concrete slats, sheltering subtropical and colonial-era plants from Portugal's former overseas territories. From the upper terrace, the view sweeps across the Baixa, the Tagus, and the hills of Almada in a single unbroken axis — the classic Lisbon light turns the river surface a deep amber in the hour before sunset.
