Ponte Infante Dom Henrique

The Ponte Infante Dom Henrique is a clean-lined steel arch bridge completed in 2002, crossing the Douro River between Porto's UNESCO-listed historic center and Vila Nova de Gaia — positioned just above the iconic double-deck Ponte Dom Luís I, which it overlooks. It bears the name of Prince Henry the Navigator, the 15th-century Portuguese royal who bankrolled and organized the expeditions that launched the Age of Discovery, despite rarely sailing himself. Walking across the bridge offers unobstructed sightlines in both directions: Porto's terracotta rooftops and azulejo-clad facades to the north, and the hillside port wine lodges of Gaia — Sandeman, Taylor's, Graham's — inscribed in large letters across the south bank. As the quieter of Porto's central Douro crossings, the pedestrian lane rarely crowds, making it one of the more relaxed vantage points for watching river traffic and the evening light settle over the valley.
