Praça de Gonçalves Zarco

Praça de Gonçalves Zarco marks the western terminus of Avenida da Boavista, one of Porto's longest urban arteries, stretching five kilometers through the city's western districts. The square was named on 24 March 1941 after João Gonçalves Zarco, the 15th-century Portuguese navigator credited with rediscovering Madeira and overseeing its early colonization. Today it functions as a quiet urban junction in the Nevogilde neighborhood — more of a wayfinding landmark for the western city than a destination in its own right.
