Victoria Gate

Victoria Gate is a Victorian-era city gate built in 1885 by the British colonial administration and named in honour of Queen Victoria. It serves as the principal entrance into Valletta from the Grand Harbour — historically the busiest and most strategic part of the city. The gate was constructed on the exact site of the 16th-century Del Monte Gate, layering centuries of fortification history into a single threshold. Positioned between the Marina Curtain and St. Barbara Bastion, the stone archway sits within Valletta's formidable ring of defences, a system that helped earn the city its UNESCO World Heritage status. Passing through today, visitors step from the harbour-front bustle directly into the narrow baroque streets of the old town, with sweeping views back over the Grand Harbour framing the approach.
