Cologne Stadtwald

Cologne's Stadtwald is a 207-hectare urban forest on the city's western edge, laid out in the late 19th century as part of the Kaiserzeit-era green-belt planning that shaped many large German cities. At its heart lies the Decksteiner Weiher, a lake where pedal and rowing boats can be hired in summer. An extensive trail network makes it the go-to jogging and cycling circuit for western Cologne's residents, while the old-growth canopy — oak and beech trees over a century old in places — provides genuine quiet away from city noise. Clearings serve as informal picnic spots, and the lakeside draws families, dog-walkers, and cyclists in roughly equal measure.
