Architecture in Göreme

Göreme sits at the heart of Cappadocia in Turkey, a region where architecture is literally carved from volcanic rock. The Göreme Open Air Museum preserves Byzantine rock-cut churches, including the Analipsis Church, while Zelve village documents an entire community once hollowed into the soft tuff. Landmarks such as Uchisar Castle, Ortahisar Castle, and Nevşehir Castle rise as dramatic natural rock towers shaped by hand and erosion alike. Below ground, the extensive carved cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı reveal another dimension of this built environment. The ruined complex of Açıksaray and the Nevşehir Museum round out the architectural story told across Göreme National Park.
