Aktepe hill. Sunset point

Also known as: Cruising the Red Hill

Aktepe Hill on the western edge of Göreme is Cappadocia's go-to vantage point for watching the sun set over one of the world's most otherworldly landscapes. The hilltop offers an unobstructed 360-degree view across the Göreme Valley and its thousands of fairy chimneys — the cone-shaped tufa formations sculpted over millennia by volcanic deposits and wind erosion. As the light fades, the pale rock turns deep amber and rust, a spectacle that has made this spot one of the most photographed in Turkey. The path to the summit takes roughly 15 minutes on foot; the viewpoint fills up quickly before sunset, so arriving early is advisable.
