Çavuşin Castle

Çavuşin Castle is an abandoned Byzantine rock-cut settlement perched dramatically above the village of Çavuşin in Cappadocia's volcanic tuff landscape. The site was an important early Christian hub: its cave church of St. John the Baptist contains 5th-century frescoes among the oldest surviving in the region, thought to have been commissioned during the reign of Emperor Nicephorus Phocas. The last residents didn't leave until the 1960s, when a landslide destabilized the cliff face and made the dwellings too dangerous to inhabit. Rough, unmarked paths climb to the castle's crown, rewarding visitors with an unobstructed panorama across the Rose Valley and the iconic fairy chimneys below. The site has no barriers or guardrails, so sure footing is essential.
