Abdijkerk Rolduc

Rolduc Abbey Church is one of the most intact Romanesque ecclesiastical ensembles in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, situated in Kerkrade, Netherlands, just metres from the German border. The canons' chapter was founded around 1104, and the three-aisled basilica — with its twin west towers and largely original crypt — represents a rare example of 12th-century church architecture preserved in near-complete form. Following Napoleonic secularization in 1797 the complex passed through various uses before being revived in 1843 as a seminary and conference centre, a function it still holds today. Visitors can explore the church interior and crypt, where Romanesque carved capitals and the austere nave offer a markedly different atmosphere from the more ornate Baroque churches common in the wider Aachen region.
