Armathwaite Castle

Armathwaite Castle is a 15th-century fortified tower house on the banks of the River Eden in Cumbria, built to defend against Scottish border raids during a period of persistent cross-border conflict. Over the following centuries it was gradually converted into a country manor, a trajectory common to many fortified residences along the Anglo-Scottish border. It is listed as a Grade II* structure — a designation awarded to only around six percent of listed buildings in England, reflecting its architectural and historical significance. The castle remains in private ownership and sits within landscaped grounds directly beside the River Eden, lending it a quietly atmospheric riverside setting.
