Bellister Castle

Bellister Castle, near Haltwhistle in Northumberland, pairs the ruined shell of a 14th-century peel tower with a crenellated manor house built against it in the 19th century — a layering of medieval defensiveness and Victorian romanticism characteristic of the English borderlands. Peel towers of this type were built as fortified retreats against the frequent cross-border raids that plagued the Anglo-Scottish marches well into the 16th century. The property is now in the care of the National Trust, listed as a Scheduled Monument and a Grade I historic building. The combination of crumbling medieval masonry and Victorian manor house set in parkland gives the site an atmospheric, quietly melancholic character.
