Birdoswald — known in antiquity as Banna — is a 2nd-century Roman auxiliary fort perched on a ridge above the River Irthing in Cumbria, one of the best-preserved stretches of Hadrian's Wall. The Wall itself was ordered by Emperor Hadrian from 122 AD as the northernmost defended frontier of the Roman Empire. What sets Birdoswald apart is evidence that occupation continued well beyond the formal Roman withdrawal in the early 5th century, suggesting local power structures persisted into the early medieval period long after the legions departed. Managed by English Heritage, the site today features exposed fort foundations, reconstructed wall sections, and open hillside views across the Cumbrian landscape. Hadrian's Wall has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
