Bewcastle Castle

Bewcastle Castle is a ruined fortification in the remote parish of Bewcastle in northern Cumbria, just a few miles from the Scottish border. The surrounding area formed part of the contested medieval border zone — the lawless 'Border Country' disputed between England and Scotland for centuries — and the castle likely served as a control point in this difficult terrain. Today the ruin stands amid open moorland, drawing mainly walkers drawn to the solitude of the northern Pennines.
