Appleby Castle

Appleby Castle stands on a hill above the River Eden in the market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria, and ranks among the better-preserved Norman fortifications in northern England. Its centrepiece, the keep known as Caesar's Tower, dates to around 1120 and holds Grade I listed status alongside designation as a Scheduled Ancient Monument — England's dual highest levels of protection. The castle was expanded with a manor house and curtain wall during the medieval period, and in the 17th century Lady Anne Clifford undertook a sweeping restoration following damage during the English Civil War. Today visitors can explore the castle grounds and gardens above the Eden, with the Tower's thick Norman stonework offering a tangible link to the century of the Conquest.
