Interlaken Ost railway station

Interlaken Ost is the larger of Interlaken's two railway stations and one of a handful in Switzerland where standard-gauge and metre-gauge trains share the same platforms. The station opened in 1874 as an unstaffed halt called Interlaken Zollhaus; it was only in 1890 that the Berner Oberland-Bahn established its terminus here, transforming the stop into a proper interchange. That coexistence of two track gauges reflects the piecemeal expansion of different railway companies into the Bernese Oberland during the late 19th century. The building carries protected status as a cultural asset of cantonal significance. Today it serves as the main rail gateway for journeys toward Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and the Jungfraujoch.
