Belvárosi Nagyboldogasszony Főszékesegyház

The Cathedral of the Assumption in Kalocsa serves as the episcopal seat of the Archdiocese of Kalocsa-Kecskemét, one of the oldest church provinces in Hungary. Construction began in 1728 under Habsburg patronage, rising on the ruins of an earlier medieval cathedral that had been destroyed during the Ottoman occupation of the region. Its Baroque facade and imposing nave follow the canonical Central European ecclesiastical style of the early 18th century. The archdiocese itself dates back to the 11th century, founded under King Stephen I of Hungary, lending the building a weight of ecclesiastical history that far predates its current form. The cathedral is open to visitors and fully wheelchair accessible.
