Branstree

Branstree is a 713-metre fell in the southern Lake District, Cumbria, and one of Alfred Wainwright's catalogued summits from his iconic pictorial guides of the 1950s and 1960s. It sits at the southwestern end of Mardale valley, overlooking Haweswater Reservoir — a body of water created in the 1930s when the valley was flooded, submerging the village of Mardale Green in the process. During periods of particularly low water levels, the outlines of the drowned village occasionally re-emerge from the reservoir. The route to the summit crosses open, trackless moorland, making it better suited to experienced fell walkers comfortable with map and compass navigation.
