Brienner Straße

Brienner Strasse is one of Munich's four grand boulevards, alongside Ludwig-, Maximilian- and Prinzregentenstrasse. It runs from Odeonsplatz through Maxvorstadt and is named after the 1814 Battle of Brienne, where Bavarian troops fought Napoleon. From 1815 King Ludwig I had it laid out as a representative axis, with Wittelsbacher Platz and Koenigsplatz as highlights. Leo von Klenze designed long stretches in austere Classicism, and town palaces, bank buildings and the former Nazi Fuehrerbau ensemble still line the street. Today the address mixes luxury boutiques, galleries and quiet courtyards, with sight-lines onto the Propylaea and Glyptothek.
