Zurich
Also known as: Buerkliplatz, Burkliplatz
Buerkliplatz is the central hinge of Zurich's Quaianlagen, the chain of promenades, parks and boat landings laid out along the lower lake basin in 1887 by city engineer Arnold Buerkli. Three boat landings sit right on the square, and the ZSG steamers toward Rapperswil cast off here. On Saturdays the square has hosted the city's largest flea and antique market for decades, drawing dealers from across Switzerland; in summer ice-cream bikes appear and swimmers head to the Enge lake bath opposite. The Buerkli terrace at the water's edge is a classic meeting point and a quick-lunch spot from the surrounding takeaways.
