Abydos

Abydos was one of antiquity's most strategically vital cities in Asia Minor, positioned at the narrowest crossing of the Dardanelles on the Asian shore — today on the Kap Nağara peninsula roughly 5 km north of Çanakkale. In 480 BC the Persian king Xerxes famously ordered two pontoon bridges to be built here, allowing his massive army to cross into Europe on the march toward Greece. The site is equally famous as the mythological setting of Hero and Leander: Leander is said to have swum the strait nightly to reach his beloved Hero on the opposite shore — a story later retold by Virgil, Ovid, and Lord Byron. The location today falls within a Turkish military restricted zone, and no significant ruins are accessible to the public. Its layered significance — Persian invasion route, Greek myth, Roman port — makes it compelling as a historical reference point even if direct visits remain impossible.
