The New Collection

Die Neue Sammlung in Munich's Kunstareal holds about 120,000 objects and can claim to be the oldest and largest design museum in the world. Founded in 1925, long before the word design entered everyday use, it grew out of the Bavarian Trade Museum with the explicit mission to collect the best contemporary industrial and craft production. The permanent display in the Pinakothek der Moderne runs from Bauhaus chairs through Olivetti typewriters, Concorde cabin interiors and a Porsche Carrera to smartphones and 3D-printed prototypes. After a walk through Stephan Braunfels's architecture you understand why sneakers, toasters, and IKEA shelves are treated here with the same seriousness as the paintings in the next hall. Admission is one euro on Sundays.
