Matzleinsdorf Protestant Cemetery

The Evangelical Cemetery of Matzleinsdorf on Matzleinsdorfer Platz in Vienna's 10th district of Favoriten is the most important Protestant cemetery in Vienna and was laid out in 1858. It continues the tradition of burial grounds opened after Joseph II's 1781 Patent of Tolerance, which finally permitted Protestant burials in the city. Across some 47,000 square metres lie more than 30,000 graves, including honorary graves of conductor Karl Boehm, playwright Ferdinand Raimund, and philanthropist Henriette Treumann. The neoclassical cemetery chapel still hosts ecumenical funeral services. Despite its location on one of Vienna's busiest junctions, the cemetery is a surprisingly quiet oasis of old trees and dense ivy.
