Hietzing Cemetery

The Hietzinger cemetery on Maxingstrasse, just next to Schoenbrunn Palace, is considered Vienna's most aristocratic burial ground. Since the district was founded in 1892 it has received generations of court officials, nobles and artists, without the crowds of the Central Cemetery. Gustav Klimt lies here under a plain stone, alongside Otto Wagner pupil Otto Schoenthal, architect Adolf Loos, Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss and Grillparzer's muse Katharina Froehlich. Over 30,000 graves spread under old lime and chestnut trees, many with Art Nouveau reliefs and bronze angels from the Bitterlich workshop. Most visitors head straight to Klimt's grave in Group 5, no. 194 – a pilgrimage site for Vienna 1900 enthusiasts. Sundays are quiet enough to hear the peacocks calling from the nearby zoo.
