Artificial caves of Casal do Pardo

Also known as: Grutas da Quinta do Anjo, Grutas do Casal do Pardo

Lisbon

Prehistoric Neolithic rock-cut tombs near Palmela — one of Portugal's most significant megalithic monuments.

The Palmela rock-cut tombs are prehistoric collective burial sites from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, located roughly 200 meters southeast of the church of Aldeia de Cima near Quinta do Anjo in the Região de Lisboa. These artificial tholos-style tombs were carved directly into the bedrock and served as communal resting places for entire clans across multiple generations. Excavations have yielded pottery shards, flint tools, and bones indicating dense habitation of the area in the third millennium BC. The site is one of the most significant megalithic monuments on the Iberian Peninsula.
