Castro of Chibanes

Iron Age hillfort in the Arrábida Natural Park offering sweeping views and evidence of ancient Mediterranean trade connections.

Perched on a ridge of the Serra do Louro within the Arrábida Natural Park, Castro de Chibanes is one of Portugal's most significant Iron Age hillforts. Occupied roughly between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC, the settlement commanded sweeping views over surrounding valleys and access routes to the coast — exactly the kind of position Iron Age communities valued for defense and trade control. Excavations have uncovered ceramics, tools, and evidence of Mediterranean connections. Today the site is rewarding for both history enthusiasts and hikers: the trail up offers panoramic views across the Arrábida hills to the Atlantic. Little signage exists on-site, so reading up beforehand adds depth to the visit.
